I adore taking a simple box cake and turning it into something fabulous! You look like a total star baker (because you are, of course!) and you can wow your guests every time by elevating a classic in a creative way! That’s exactly what you’ll do with this twist on the classic Milk and Cookies! I mean, everything great is even better on top of cake, right?!
I’m going to show you one version of these cupcakes, but let your creativity run wild… with different combinations of cakes and cookie flavors, you could easily turn this into a masterpiece that would suit almost any party theme or holiday occasion!
You’ll find the full recipe at the bottom of the page, but let me quickly walk you through the steps so you’ll see how easy it is to go from cake box mix to “OMG I can’t wait to eat that!” Take a look…
Milk & Cookies Cupcake Recipe
Using your favorite vanilla cake box mix, you’ll follow the directions on the back of the box to prepare the batter. Be sure to preheat your oven and place your cupcake liners in the pan. We used plain red here, but if you’re doing a Christmas themed version (because I think these are perfect for Santa’s Milk & Cookies!) I’d use something like these cute Christmas Cupcake Liners or even these playful Prancing Buffalo Plaid Liners with antlers!
Add your mini chocolate chips to the cake batter and then fill your cupcake lines 2/3 full before placing your cupcake tray in the oven to bake as directed.
Remove them from the oven and allow them to cool completely before frosting.
Milk & Cookies Cupcake Frosting Recipe
You’ll actually make two different types of frosting for this recipe. You’ll make the vanilla frosting which will serve as your base for the chocolate chip cookie and cookie dough scoop and you’ll make the cookie dough frosting.
Start with making your vanilla frosting by combining your butter, powdered sugar, heavy whipping cream and vanilla until smooth. You’ll add it to a piping bag and frost the top of your cooled cupcakes with a small dome, just like pictured below.
Next, you’ll mix up your chocolate chip cookie dough frosting. To do this, you’ll combine your butter, powdered sugar, brown sugar, flour, salt, milk and vanilla. You’ll mix for 2-3 minutes until the frosting becomes really light and fluffy. Finally, add in your mini chocolate chips and mix them in well.
Now you’re ready to add this frosting to the top of your cupcakes! Grab a medium ice cream or cookie scoop and measure out a nice rounded ball of cookie dough frosting. Position each scoop on top of your vanilla frosting where you’d like it – we did ours right on the center.
The last step is to add a small chocolate chip cookie right on top of the cookie dough frosting – and viola… Milk and Cookies Cupcakes! Now you can make chocolate chip cookies from scratch for this, especially if you have a favorite family recipe. However, I decided since I made the frosting from scratch, I’d go easy on myself and use a store bought cookie. Totally your call!
And remember, you could do Oreos instead for a Cookies & Cream style cookie, add a decorated Christmas cookie if you’re doing a holiday version, add your favorite Girl Scout cookie… you know, just get creative and make it your own!
We hope you enjoyed this fun and playful version of Milk and Cookies as much as we did! Be sure to Pin this post for later party and holiday planning!
