For mild crowding or spacing, plan on eight to twelve months of active treatment. More complex bite corrections can take a couple of years. Align Technology, which makes Invisalign®, says treatment can be completed in as little as six months, depending on the case, but that is the short end of the range.
Those numbers cover the time you spend wearing aligners. They leave out the weeks before your first set arrives and the retainer stage afterward. If you are planning around a date, this is the full sequence.

Before you start: the consultation
An orthodontist examines your teeth and bite and tells you whether aligners suit your case. They do not suit every case. The American Association of Orthodontists notes that some problems are treated more predictably with braces. This is also when you get an estimate of how long your own treatment will run.
See your family dentist first if you are due. Cavities and gum problems need to be dealt with before treatment begins.
The scan: 10 to 15 minutes
A digital scanner maps your teeth. It takes about 10 to 15 minutes. The orthodontist uses the scan to plan each stage of movement.
Waiting for your aligners: four to six weeks
Your aligners are made to order. Delivery can take four to six weeks from the scan. Nothing is happening in your mouth during this stretch, so build it into your planning.
The fitting appointment: about an hour
At the delivery visit, which runs 45 minutes to an hour, you receive your first aligners and learn how to wear and clean them. Most plans include attachments, which are small tooth coloured bumps bonded to certain teeth to give the aligners something to grip. They make the aligners slightly more noticeable up close, and they stay on until treatment ends.
The first week
Expect about a week of adjustment. The aligners feel tight, and some people notice a slight change in their speech for a few days. Both settle.
The routine: months of daily wear
This is the long part.
- Aligners are worn 20 to 22 hours a day. They come out to eat, to drink anything other than water, and to brush.
- Each set is typically worn for a week before you move to the next. Your orthodontist may set a longer interval.
- Progress visits are usually every six to ten weeks. Your orthodontist sets the schedule for your case.
Life with aligners means brushing after every meal, carrying a case, and thinking twice about the afternoon coffee you used to sip for an hour.
What stretches the timeline
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, neither braces nor aligners has a built in speed advantage. The case and the wear matter more. The common reasons treatment runs long are:
- Wearing the aligners fewer hours than prescribed
- Losing an aligner and waiting for a replacement
- Missed appointments
- A cavity or gum problem that has to be treated partway through
Adults also often take longer than teens, because adult teeth are more firmly set in the jaw.
After the last aligner: retainers
Treatment does not end when the aligners do. Teeth drift back toward where they started unless something holds them. The American Association of Orthodontists says a retainer is typically needed for life, though how often you wear it may decrease over time. Ask about this at the consultation, so it is part of the plan from the start.
A sample timeline
For an adult with mild crowding, a realistic plan looks like this:
- Consultation and scan: week 1
- Aligners arrive: weeks 5 to 7
- Active treatment: 8 to 12 months
- Retainers: from the day treatment ends
That puts the full process at roughly ten to fourteen months. Your orthodontist will give you an estimate for your own case, and it may be shorter or longer.
Frequently asked questions
Can Invisalign really work in six months?
For some minor cases, yes. Most adults should plan for longer.
How many hours a day do I have to wear the aligners?
20 to 22 hours. In practice that means taking them out only to eat, drink and brush.
Will people notice them?
The aligners are clear, but most plans use small tooth coloured attachments that can be seen up close.
Is Invisalign faster than braces?
Not inherently. The complexity of the case and how consistently the aligners are worn decide the length of treatment.
Do I need a retainer afterward?
Yes. Without one, teeth tend to move back.
