Sunny Day is an empowering show for young girls on Nick Jr. centered around a salon-owning entrepreneur who solves problems with determination, creativity and compassion. My daughter really loves the show and wanted to use it as the theme for her 9th Birthday Party. Let’s be honest, most young girls love having their hair and nails done, so a Sunny Day Salon Birthday Party may be the perfect theme for the next party you throw! Let’s take a look…
In case you haven’t been around one lately, nine year olds have really specific opinions and ideas about what they want for their birthday parties! My daughter knew months ahead of time that she wanted a Sunny Day themed party so of course, I made her dreams come true! The key components? A hair and nail salon – just like Sunny Day and her friends enjoy! I kept the party fairly simple, we invited a handful of her girlfriends and they all had a blast! Here are some ideas so you can do the same.
Sunny Day Party Ideas
A great party always begins with the invitation! It’s an easy way to set the tone and describe the theme so your guests know what to expect. I found this adorable Sunny Day themed party invitation on Etsy. I was able to print the invitations myself and the set comes with matching thank you cards, which my daughter loved using after the party.
I actually didn’t find a ton of Sunny Day party decor online or at stores that I liked, so I kept decorations to a minimum and instead pulled colors from Sunny’s outfit for my decorations: hot pink, bright blue and yellow. On the front door, I threw together this DIY Birthday Wreath using a cake topper I already had in the pantry and a Sunny Day and friends cutout that came with the Glam Van I used on her cake (more on that in a minute).
I also decorated our mantle with a simple gold Happy Birthday banner and Sunny Day colored balloons. It served as the perfect place for presents and a photo of my daughter with all of her friends.
Sunny Day Cake Ideas
My daughter requested a homemade strawberry cake, so I make this cute little three tiered cake and decorated it in my party color palette of pink, yellow and blue. I did three rows of rosettes in different colored icing and covered the top in sprinkles and this miniature Glam Van (the vehicle Sunny and her friends drive on the show). The Glam Van is actually a toy and my daughter was excited she got to keep it after the party was over.
My niece was a party guest as well and she’s allergic to eggs, so I made her these special cupcakes and decorated them with the same icing from the cake. I love the mix of bright colors and how neat they look. You can easily recreate this by using a few different icing colors and decorating techniques!
Salon Party Ideas
The main activities at the party were the hair and nail salon. I set up two different tables – one focused on hair and one for nails. I went to the dollar store and grabbed a variety of headbands, bobby pins, rubber bands and new brushes. Each girl selected a brush I used only on her and then she got to take it home as a party favor. I also got some spray on temporary hair color in bright colors and found hair glitter as well at Target!
The photos of hairstyles you see below were found on Nick Jr.’s Youtube channel and are Sunny Day tutorial videos (very helpful)! I’m so glad I printed out a few ideas and gave the girls a choice about which hairstyle they wanted. It helped the event run much more smoothly!
Here’s my daughter’s hair – and the hairstyle most of the girl’s chose. They loved it and I think it turned out pretty well!
We also did the girl’s nails and I had a handful of nail colors and nail stickers they could choose from. Thankfully my amazing sister-in-law stepped up and did nails while I focused on hair! She even brought her nail dryer which the girls really liked using.
Sunny Day Party Favors
As parting gifts, I made these simple party favor bags using pink bags I found at the dollar store and dressing them up with gold letters for each girl’s initial. I added curled blue and yellow ribbon to the handles to keep with my color theme too.
Each bag was filled with a handheld mirror, brush, headband, butterfly nail file and a few other goodies they picked up during the course of the party.
Overall, my daughter and her friends had a fabulous time playing together and having their hair and nails done! This Sunny Day Birthday Party was definitely a hit! Be sure to Pin these ideas to your Party Planning board before you go!
