It’s natural to be cautious about adopting AI quickly for security reasons, but it’s counterproductive. In reality, when the appropriate precautions are set up from the start, teams can actually be faster as they don’t have to worry all the time about potential misuse of their tools and corporate information.

The shadow AI problem nobody wants to talk about
Before an official roll out even starts, it’s often the case that your employees are already utilizing aspects of AI. They copy and paste client information into public LLMs, enter customer emails into free summarizing programs, and test out code writing apps designed to generate code and store provided prompts on unapproved third-party servers. In short, they’re using unsanctioned tools since no sanctioned solutions are available.
Banning these tools outright isn’t the solution. You can’t prevent use of a free, easy-to-access product. You need to have a tiered access model. Offer employees a sandbox they can experiment with. Develop enterprise-grade models with high-security standards for workflows that access crucial data. Give your employees the scope to experiment without exposing your enterprise. Shadow AI starts phasing out when the approved avenue is the easier path than the unsanctioned solutions.
Build the governance layer before you need it
A governance framework sounds like something you put in place after things go wrong. Build it before that. It should define which categories of data – PII, trade secrets, financial records – are prohibited from entering public-facing LLMs, and those rules should be part of an AI Acceptable Use Policy that every team acknowledges before they get access to anything.
Two security controls that belong in this layer early are transparency logs and human-in-the-loop checkpoints. Transparency logs create a record of every AI-generated output: what prompt triggered it, what data it drew from, and when it was produced. That auditability matters when something goes wrong, and it matters even more during compliance reviews. Human-in-the-loop requirements mean that high-stakes outputs – contracts, financial summaries, customer-facing communications – get a human review before they’re finalized. Modular integration beats “all-in” adoption
One of the quieter risks in AI rollouts is over-commitment to a single model or vendor. Teams build workflows around a specific LLM, and when that model’s security posture changes, a competitor outperforms it, or a compliance requirement shifts, the company is stuck.
Modular integration is the alternative. Instead of building around one AI system, design workflows so that the model itself can be swapped out – the inputs, outputs, and integrations remain consistent even as the underlying model changes. Retrieval-Augmented Generation is worth examining here: grounding AI outputs in a company’s own verified data rather than the model’s general training reduces hallucinations and keeps sensitive context inside a controlled environment rather than baked into a public model’s behavior.
API security is part of this too. Every connection between an AI model and an internal business system is a potential attack surface. Prompt injection – where malicious inputs manipulate model behavior or extract data through the interface – is a real vulnerability that gets worse as AI is embedded deeper into production systems.
From experiment to enterprise: the scaling problem
Implementing AI in a pilot is not very challenging. However, when it comes to scaling it across an entire company without adding risks, this is where most companies struggle. Zero Trust architecture is a great approach: no user, device, or system is granted access by default, and each connection is authenticated and authorized. This principle applies to AI access, just as it would for any other enterprise system.
It usually becomes evident at this point that companies might need external help. Their internal teams are too involved and are often focused on rapid implementation. Red team your AI before attackers do
Organize AI red teaming exercises on a recurring basis. These exercises aim to simulate attacks against the organization’s AI infrastructure to determine potential vulnerabilities for exploits, assess the AI model logic for potential misuse, verify potential data leakage through API connections, and assess suitability for prompt injection on production systems. The outcomes of these exercises cascade directly back to the governance framework.
Security is not the enemy of AI adoption. Companies that build the guardrails early end up moving faster at scale because they’re not constantly unwinding decisions made in the rush to ship.
